Taking Violence Against Women to a Whole New Level

This story is appalling to me. But for a different reason than what the news stations are reporting. A piñata store in Donna, Texas now sells topless female shaped piñatas, some even come in sexy poses or positioned on a stripper pole. They are hanging next to Elmo and other kids themed piñatas. The KRGV report says:

Some parents are upset about X-rated images on display. Erica Garcia says, “I have kids in the car and I have an 8-year-old little boy and when he saw that, he said, ‘Mommy!’ So that really freaked me out.”

These parents are upset because they don’t want their kids to see naked women, which I get (to each is own). But wait – what about the fact that the people who buy these piñatas are taking them home and beating the shit out of a female shaped stripper piñata with a bat? Does that part not bother anyone else? The image of a bunch of men participating in this at a bachelor party (which the store owner says they are often bought for) is repulsive.

I get the symbolism of the piñata in the latin culture. And just to be sure I did a little research. Here’s what I found on Wikipedia:

The original 7 pointed star pinata.

The original piñata was shaped like a star with seven points. The points represented the seven deadly sins, and the bright colors of the piñata symbolize temptation. The blindfold represents faith and the stick is virtue or the will to overcome sin. The candies and other goodies inside the piñata are the riches of the kingdom of heaven. Thus teaching that with faith and virtue one could overcome sin and receive all the rewards of heaven.

So again, I get it. I get that it’s not meant to be a symbol of violence. However, like I said, imagine a group of drunk men at a bachelor party, equiped with a baseball bat, beating the shit out of a female stripper, look-a-like piñata. It’s disgusting. There’s a lot of talk about video games and movies that normalize violence and de-sensitize us to violent acts – this is just another one to add to the list.
